Voice and Speech

This course aims at improving spoken English by practicing specific vowel and consonant sounds as well as rhythm and intonation. Class members study and practice speaking skills needed to function appropriately in a U.S. academic setting as well as in U.S. society in general. Examples as well as self-recordings are used to identify and improve challenges in pronunciation.

An English/ESL student should master four skills: Reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Many ESL students feel shy or embarrassed about their spoken English. Even students who are otherwise confident, don’t have confidence when they speak English. Students face several challenges trying to speak: finding the right words, coming up with correct grammar, coming up with the correct sentence construction, using the right tone.
