When OPT ends, many F-1 visa international students panic—but the truth is, you are not automatically out of status. Understanding your grace period after OPT, your legal options, and your next steps can help you stay in the United States and continue building your career in acting, film, or education.

What Happens When OPT Ends for F-1 Visa Students?

When OPT ends, your employment authorization stops—but your F-1 visa status does not end immediately. Most students enter a 60-day grace period, giving you time to plan your next move.

Grace Period After OPT – Are You Still in Status?

Yes. During the grace period after OPT, you are still legally in the US, you can:

  • Transfer to another SEVP-certified school

  • Apply for a new program

  • Prepare to change your visa status

  • Plan your departure

However, you cannot work during this time.

Options After OPT Ends for International Students

When OPT ends, you have several strategic options:

  • Continue your education (new degree or conservatory program)

  • Transfer your SEVIS record to another school

  • Explore training programs in acting, film, or performing arts

  • Return home and apply again later

How to Stay in the U.S. After OPT Ends

To remain in status, you must act before your grace period ends.

The most reliable path is to transfer your SEVIS record to a new program, this allows you to:

  • Stay legally in the U.S.

  • Continue building your career

  • Maintain your F-1 visa status
