Firstly, M-1 students cannot change to F or H status while in the United States. Therefore, if you wish to attend school as an F-1 student, you must leave the U.S., apply to an SEVP-certified school, and receive a new Form I-20. Additionally, you will need to apply for a new visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate, if applicable.
Alternative Option for Prospective Students
If you are currently in the United States for reasons other than attending school and would like to become a student, you may also decide to leave the country and follow the traditional process to obtain an F-1 or M-1 students visa. This includes:
Apply and receive acceptance from an SEVP-certified school.
Receive a new initial Form I-20 from your designated school official (DSO).
Pay the I-901 SEVIS Fee.
Apply for a visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
Return to the United States to begin your studies.
Prepare for the F-1 or M-1 student visa interview.
An F-1 visa is issued to international students attending an academic program or English Language Program at a U.S. college or university. Furthermore, F-1 students must maintain the minimum course load for full-time student status.
