OPT 60-Day Grace Period: What Happens Next?

If your OPT is ending, you may still have time to stay in the United States. The OPT 60-day grace period allows international students to remain in the U.S. legally after Optional Practical Training ends—but only if you act quickly. Understanding your options during this window can determine whether you continue your journey in America or leave opportunities behind.

What Is the OPT 60-Day Grace Period?

The OPT 60-day grace period is a limited timeframe after your OPT ends during which you can remain in the U.S. without working.

During these 60 days, you can:

  • Transfer to a new SEVP-certified school

  • Apply for a new academic program

  • Prepare to leave the U.S.

  • Change your visa status (if eligible)

⚠️ You cannot work during this period.

What Can You Do During the OPT Grace Period?

The OPT grace period is your opportunity to plan your next move strategically.

Your main options include:

  • Continue your education (new degree or program)

  • Transfer your SEVIS record to another school

  • Explore acting or filmmaking programs

  • Prepare for departure from the U.S.

Stay in the U.S. After OPT with a Student Visa

One of the most effective ways to stay legally is by enrolling in a new program.

At the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory, international students can:

  • Receive an I-20

  • Maintain legal F-1 status

  • Continue building a career in acting, film, and television

The Los Angeles Acting Conservatory offers both M1 student visas and F1 student visas, helping students transition smoothly after OPT.
