OPT Ends? Can You Pause Work and Stay in the U.S.?

If your OPT ends and you're wondering whether you can stay in the United States without working, you're not alone. Many international students on OPT face this exact situation and want to understand their legal options. The rules around staying in the U.S. after OPT ends are strict, but there are still pathways to remain legally if you plan ahead.

What Happens When OPT Ends?

When your OPT ends, your F-1 status does not immediately expire. Instead, most students receive a 60-day grace period to prepare their next step.

During this time, you can:

  • Stay legally in the U.S.

  • Transfer to another school

  • Apply for a new program

  • Prepare to leave the country

However, you cannot continue working once your OPT ends.

Can You Stay in the U.S. Without Working After OPT Ends?

Yes—but only under specific conditions.

After your OPT ends, you can remain in the U.S. during your grace period without working. This is not a work extension—it’s a transition window.

To stay longer, you must:

  • Transfer your SEVIS record to a new school

  • Change your visa status

  • Enroll in a new academic program

Otherwise, you must leave the U.S. before your grace period expires.

Best Options for Students After OPT Ends

If you want to stay in the U.S. after OPT ends, here are your most realistic options:

1. Continue Your Education

Enroll in a new program and maintain your F-1 status.

2. Transfer Schools

You can transfer your SEVIS record to a SEVP-approved school.

3. Change Your Visa Status

Apply for a different visa category (if eligible).

4. Prepare for Departure

If no option applies, plan your exit within the grace period.

How to Stay in the U.S. Legally After OPT Ends

The key to staying legally after OPT ends is timing.

You must act before your 60-day grace period ends.

Important tips:

  • Speak with your DSO early

  • Apply to programs in advance

  • Keep your SEVIS record active

  • Avoid overstaying your visa
