Transfer Your F-1 Visa Before September 15, 2026 and Continue Studying Acting in Los Angeles

If you are currently studying in the United States on an F-1 student visa, you may be eligible to transfer your SEVIS record to the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory before September 15, 2026.

Students accepted into our SEVP-certified acting school may continue studying in Los Angeles for up to three years, provided they maintain valid F-1 status and comply with all U.S. immigration requirements.

With new federal regulations taking effect this September, international students should carefully review their educational plans and understand how the changes may affect their future studies.

If you're considering transferring schools, now is the ideal time to speak with our International Admissions Team.

Trump Administration Finalizes Major Changes to Student Visas

On July 16, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced a final rule that significantly changes how international student visas are administered.

The new regulation ends the long-standing "Duration of Status (D/S)" policy and replaces it with a fixed period of admission for most F-1, J-1, and I visa holders.

According to DHS, the purpose of the rule is to increase federal oversight, strengthen national security, reduce immigration fraud, and ensure that international students complete their academic programs within established timeframes.

The regulation is scheduled to take effect approximately 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, placing implementation in mid-September 2026.

Can I Still Transfer My F-1 Visa? Yes.

If you currently attend another SEVP-certified institution, you may still be eligible to transfer your SEVIS record to the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory before the new regulations take full effect.

Our admissions office assists eligible students with:

  • F-1 visa transfers

  • SEVIS transfer procedures

  • Admissions applications

  • Form I-20 issuance

  • International student advising

  • Academic planning

Beginning your transfer before September 15, 2026 may help ensure a smooth transition into your new academic program.

Continue Your Acting Education in Hollywood for Up to Three Years

The Los Angeles Acting Conservatory provides professional acting education for international students who want to study in the entertainment capital of the world.

Accepted students may enroll in academic programs that provide up to three years of conservatory training, provided they:

  • Maintain full-time enrollment

  • Remain in valid F-1 status

  • Meet satisfactory academic progress requirements

  • Continue complying with SEVP and DHS regulations

Our admissions advisors can help determine which program best matches your educational and immigration goals.

What Is Changing Under the New Rule?

For nearly five decades, most international students were admitted under the Duration of Status (D/S) system.

This allowed students to remain in the United States as long as they continued making normal academic progress and maintained lawful F-1 status.

The new DHS regulation replaces this policy with a fixed admission period and several additional federal requirements.

Fixed Four-Year Admission Period

Most F-1 students will now receive admission for the length of their approved academic program, up to a maximum of four years.

Instead of remaining in the country for the entire duration of their studies under the previous D/S framework, students whose education extends beyond the authorized period must seek additional approval from USCIS.

Extension of Stay Will Require Federal Approval

Students who need additional time to complete their education must submit an Extension of Stay (EOS) application directly to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The extension process may include:

  • Government review

  • Background checks

  • Biometric screening, when required

  • Fraud prevention review

  • Filing fees

This transfers oversight from school officials to federal immigration authorities for students requesting additional time.

Shorter Grace Period After Graduation

Another significant change affects students after graduation.

The traditional 60-day grace period has been reduced to 30 days.

This means graduates have less time to:

  • Transfer to another SEVP-certified school

  • Apply for a new immigration status

  • Prepare to leave the United States

Planning ahead is now more important than ever.

New Restrictions on Academic Changes

The final rule also introduces additional restrictions affecting certain academic changes.

Students considering changing schools, academic programs, or educational pathways should consult with their Designated School Official (DSO) and prospective institution before making any decisions.

Current Students Will Automatically Transition

According to DHS, current F-1 visa holders already studying in the United States under the previous Duration of Status system will automatically transition into the new framework.

Their authorized period of stay will generally be limited to a maximum of four years from the rule's effective date, subject to the provisions of the final regulation.

Students who need additional study time beyond that period may be required to request an Extension of Stay through USCIS.

The Role of SEVP

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is administered by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a component of the Department of Homeland Security.

SEVP oversees:

  • SEVP-certified schools

  • F-1 students

  • M-1 students

  • J-1 exchange visitor programs

  • Student records through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)

SEVP works with schools and federal agencies to monitor international students throughout their educational programs in the United States.
